Placing Plants in Your Home

Having plants in the home is a great idea. Plants help everyone in the home breathe cleaner air. Furthermore they evoke a sense of serenity and tranquility in a home while cleaning the air of pollutants. Plants use a process called photosynthesis that takes in carbon dioxide and other harmful pollutants as noted by researchers at NASA and give off oxygen. Additionally this NASA study discovered specific types of plants remove 87 percent of all indoor air pollutants within a 24 hour period. These pollutants are emitted from building material, home furnishings and office equipment.
Things to remember when placing plants in your home:

  1. hang plantType of plant: Be sure to make sure the plant comes with an info insert. This info inserts has the info for the care and maintenance of the plant (watering, lighting, growth and temps). Put in a safe place not too far away so it will be at hand for you to refer back to when caring for the plant. Know yourself, what you have time for and will remember to do. Some plants are needy, needing lots of attention while others may only need weekly or bi weekly care.
  2. plant flower yellowLocation, location, location: In the winter avoid placing plants too close to heaters. These heaters tend to dry out the soil and even the plants. Also be careful not to place in close proximity to opening door ways. The constant variation in temperature from warm to cold could also shorten the plants’ life; refer to the plant’s info insert for details.
  3. Green plantWatering: I've had a few plants die due to over watering. My thinking was I eat every day, so I must feed them every day. Boy was I wrong! Check the plant info insert. Some plants just need to be watered once a week or bi weekly.
  4. Butterfly flowersLighting: Again check the plant info insert; be careful not to leave plants directly up against the window in the winter due to frost. Placing plants on the south and east windows are ideal for plants that need lots of sunlight. Plants that don’t need as much sunlight should be placed close to the west and north windows to provide adequate amount of sunlight.
