How to Do Whole House Deep Cleaning

You’ve sold the house—congratulations! You made it through the weekend showings and weeknight pop-overs, the offer, and acceptance, and have timed it just right for the perfect next house you just found. There is so much more to do. Packing the house, scheduling the shipping, turning off and on utilities, maybe even registering for new schools. And then there’s what you’re going to do to prepare the home you’re leaving for its next owner. If you want to leave it pristine for them, to welcome them, and wish them a wonderful future in their new home, you need a whole house deep cleaning. Here are 5 tips to make sure you do it right.

You do your best to keep up with the day-to-day cleaning, trying to stay ahead of the constant build-up of dirty dishes in the kitchen, the tidal wave of dirty clothes in the laundry room. You’ve cleared the clutter in the living room and dining room, and spot cleaned the bathrooms and all the bedrooms - including all the pet fur all over the couches and floors that seem to return before you’ve even finished vacuuming and sweeping it. But to have a house that’s really clean and healthy for you and your whole family, you need to invest some time in deep cleaning your house.

What is a deep house cleaning? Deep cleaning includes getting into the nooks and crannies of your house to get them clean. It means cleaning windows, light fixtures, and not just vacuuming under furniture, but the underside of cushions, too!

Don’t panic. It’s not as overwhelming as it sounds! We have some tips for deep cleaning the house that will not only make the process easy but will make it even easier to keep your house cleaner in between deep cleanings.

Tip #1: Create a Checklist for House Cleaning

The key to any house cleaning deep cleaning is to stay organized. A checklist for house cleaning will keep you on target for such a big job. There are thousands of pre-fabbed checklists that you can download and print, most of which are broken down by the frequency cleaning chores should be done, giving you a house cleaning 360-degree view, but even those are equally useful for a deep clean. In fact, many of the checklist items can be done regularly while you’re still living there and packing, in preparation for the deep clean and the big move. Want to avoid the crush of moving and deep cleaning at the same time? Make that checklist for house cleaning work for you ahead of your move.

Tip #2: Clean Your Home Regularly

The best way to prevent a deep cleaning of the house from becoming a major project while you’re in the middle of a million other tasks in the process of moving is to stay on top of the cleaning on a regular basis. When the bulk of cleaning is done daily and weekly, you can spend your energy and time on the corners and parts of the house that are less frequently attended to. This will make house cleaning for moving out much easier when the time comes.

We often get asked how much do house cleaning services cost (since there’s no guide to house cleaning in my area) that’s easy to find. You might be fascinated to know that a weekly cleaning schedule is the most economical choice when it comes to the cost of housecleaning. You get to enjoy having a clean house every week, and you make the load lighter when it comes time to do a whole house deep cleaning before your move.

Tip #3: House Cleaning with Purpose - Remember the Little Things

Now is not the time to skip over the areas of the house that have gone unnoticed and untouched. When you’re focused on house cleaning for moving out, remember things like wiping the top side of ceiling fan blades, baseboards, and crown moldings; pull out nails and screws from the wall and spackle and paint the holes; pull out the kitchen appliances and clean underneath them; clean cabinet shelves and remove any paper you’ve laid in them; clean and disinfect the nooks of the washing machine and dishwasher, and clean the filter in the dishwasher. Think of all the areas of the house your eyes haven’t noticed in a while, and be sure to add them to your whole house deep cleaning checklist.

Tip #4: Share the House Cleaning Activities

House Cleaning with Kids

With all the work you’re already doing, you don’t need to take on all of the whole house deep cleaning. Get the kids and/or your partner involved! Ask your friends over for a cleaning party, complete with house cleaning activities. Make it fun! Crank the music or make it a contest. There are lots of creative ways to motivate others to help you get the hard work of a deep cleaning house cleaning done. Pizza anyone?
