I don’t want fancy food, I just want a Bacon Sandwich done the proper way
I used to work in Santa Monica, I worked in an office that had one of the most enviable views in the world of the Santa Monica Pier. Hundreds of thousands of people flock there each year from all over the world to look at something that I could just glance over my laptop at. Thousands and thousands of people also work there. And every day it was impossible to buy lunch.
At the time there were a lot of famous people that worked in the area and in the competitive arena of modern show business they know that if they were to sneak out for a plate of sushi and a crisp white wine, they would be fed by their peers to TMZ. I used to work in an office next door to the late Paul Walker and I know he shared the same frustrations.
Like everyone else – famous or not, I would eat at my desk — except I didn’t, because it is impossible to buy anything in the area that I want to put into my mouth. Every single takeaway place and sandwich shop in the area only sells food that, if it could get into a polling station, would vote for a raving looney.
It’s all beans and lentils and mush and smoothies made from soil, and all the bread comes with bits in it. And by “bits”, I mean bits of what looks and feels like bits of toenails.
Recently I asked the young woman in one of these eco-friendly, sustainable takeaways if the chicken soup on the menu had any beans in it. She was completely perplexed. Because naturally it had. “How can a meal be a meal unless 90% of it is some kind of bean?” – she exclaimed.
Now, of course, many people in the area have weird beards and bicycles and will very much enjoy this kind of food and are prepared to endure the terrible flatulence that results from eating it. But equally there are many normal people who do not enjoy this kind of food and wonder, out loud and quite often, why they can’t order a simple bacon sandwich – the proper way. “Oh, we do have a bacon sandwich, sir. It comes in toenail laced bread with avocado, lettuce, some weeds and a handful of beans for your lunching pleasure.”
I have nothing against avocados, in fact I love them, but in a salad or a chicken wrap or on Mexican Food. Most of us know that one of area’s our more popular and famous residents; Mr. Tom Selleck and apparently Jamie Foxx have avocado ranches in Hidden Hills.
Being British, you ask any of us, a bacon sandwich doesn’t need anything other than plain white bread, butter and bacon. Nothing else.
When did all this start? Who woke up one morning and thought the simple cafe selling eggs and bacon or a breakfast sandwich that has sustained generations of souls needed to be ruined? Who thought that corned beef, or chunks of tender chicken with mayonnaise, was no longer suitable on its own and must be garnished with something that looks like earwax?
