A new acquaintance informed me that I was living the dream. Was he putting me on or being sincere? I don’t live in a cave and I have heard the term living the dream before, but I never really thought about it. Was I living the dream?

Before that moment I would have categorized only a Phil Collins, or a Michael Jordan as living the dream, but perhaps they are living the one in a million dream. It occurs to me that the American Dream available to all of us is self employment!

It seems every person you meet has at one time or another fantasized about owning their own business. If everyone turned their dreams into reality this country would be 98% self employed. Sadly most folks prefer to fantasize than to do what it takes to own their own business.

In the end I decided he was sincere. It’s true my life is pretty good. I can’t get fired. I don’t have a boss I can’t stand. I set my own hours. I live where I want to live. I haven’t received a paycheck from the man in over 20 years, and I have no regrets.
