If you grab your two step ladder and climb up to the cover of the fan you should be able to figure out how it is being held up there. If it is metal pins or screws, now adays who knows what it is held with.
So just do your research and don't forget how you pulled it down. Once the cover is down you can bring it to the tub or sink and set it there. Then you can climb back up and unplug the fan and remove the things holding it up there. Clean the fan itself and the blades and the cover. You can check the exhaust vent and fan housing and wipe that clean if you need to also. Next step is just to replace everything the same way as you removed it. If your fan and motor are hard wired into the wall, I would have a professional look at it. You don't want to mess up something or not be able to put it back together again.
