Why Is Legally Protecting Overworked New York Maids So Difficult?

Caitlyn Kelly of a pending New York State law to protect the rights of 200,000 domestic workers such as nannies, housekeepers and elder-care givers, more than 90 percent of whom are women of color or immigrants.

This law would stop house keepers, nannies and elder care givers from being exploited by the families that employ them. This is a good thing for professional maid services like You’ve Got MAIDS who make it a policy to treat home cleaners with respect & dignity. Since it cost money to treat your staff right, this law will level the playing field. More importantly it’s also a good thing for the maids.

This law will grant New York maids the right to take off one day off a week, among other new liberties that most of us take for granted. At You’ve Got MAIDS our house cleaners enjoy nights and weekends off. We even pay our home cleaners holiday pay, plus paid vacation after one year. We didn’t need a state legislature to mandate this; we do these things because it’s the right thing to do.
