"IT TAKES COURAGE TO BE SELF EMPLOYED.

IT TAKES COURAGE TO INVEST IN ONE'S OWN BUSINESS."

- Thomas Stanley, The Millionaire Mind

Leaving the cubicle to open your own business does take courage. I've been there. Done that.

If you are the type of person that has all the answers you could decide to create something (a business) out of nothing. Make sure you have deep pockets as trial and error is an expensive counselor.

If you are the type of person that seeks mentors and advisers then a franchise is your best choice. There is already a working prototype. You have someone to go to with industry specific experience. Sure you will need to pay royalties, but the way I look at it you are either going to pay a royalty to a franchiser for a road map and ongoing advice (like a GPS), or you are going to pay royalties to opportunity cost. The former is safer. The later has more risk and often more costly.
