Shawshank Redemption At You've Got MAIDS

SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION & THE HOUSE CLEANER

Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies because its main character embodies many of the virtues I find meaningful. These virtues are faith, hope, moderation, wisdom, patience, courage, unselfish love, justice, & perseverance.

Virtues are essentially good habits. Vices bad. Most of us have a vision for the direction we want our lives to take. We weave virtues into the fabric of our lives to protect us from the vices of this world that would seek to derail us from reaching our end goal. Am I a pessimist if I feel it is an uphill battle?

Shawshank is one of those rare motion pictures where one watches the film before feeling compelled to read the book. I haven’t been guilty of this since the Simpsons Movie. Stephen King proves he can write more than just horror novels…in 1982 Stephen King wrote Four Seasons comprised of four short stories:

  1. Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption (subtitled: Hope Springs Eternal)
  2. Apt Pupil (subtitled: Summer of Corruption)
  3. The Body (subtitled: Fall From Innocence)
  4. The Breathing Method (subtitled: A Winter's Tale)

Shawshank isn’t about the finish line where Andy and his friend Red are reunited on a sandy Mexican beach. In fact there is no dialogue in this part of the movie. Instead, Shawshank is all about the journey. Sometimes bad things happen to good people. We can toss in the towel or we can persevere. We can practices courage.

The Warden told Andy at the beginning of the tale that “Salvation lies within”. Andy took this message to heart.

At You’ve Got MAIDS we are looking for salvation from within. Growing our house cleaning service brand can be a grind on some days. A few years back I had an maid steal two Clients…this act defines her as a maid of dishonor and questions the integrity of the house cleaning service Clients as well. When I learned of this theft it was as if someone had kicked me in the gut. I try to treat our house cleaners as I would want to be treated but sometimes my loyalty to this principle makes me feel foolish.

So what do you do? Do you treat 100% of your employees like criminals when in fact only 1% are guilty? Truth is that 99 % of our team are women of integrity (now 100%). I guess the answer lies in the question. Of course not.

Be vigilant. Expect the best. Treat others like you would like to be treated. Once in a while a rouge will take advantage of you, so you take your lumps and get back in the game.
