Will my house cleaning franchise have a protected territory? Absolutely! The professional maid service franchise, You've Got Maids, wouldn’t have it any other way. Each Franchise Partner has a protected territory to ensure no company-owned or other Franchise Partners will ever compete with them for the same house cleaning customers.
You’ve Got MAIDS favors straight lines on a protected house cleaning territory (zip code lines, census lines, rivers, roads, etc.). Some maid service franchises do a radius which seems problematic at best.
Domino’s Pizza protected territories are roughly 3 miles, but could be smaller in an urban environment. Their goal is quick pizza delivery, so they give their franchise rep a stop watch and send them to the proposed site to do drive times with the franchisee. Starting at the proposed store location, the franchisee and the franchise rep will drive 12 minutes in various directions. This is a very dangerous time for Domino’s Pizza franchise reps as the franchisee normally offers to drive. Franchisee’s have been known to break a few driving laws to extend their protected territory. Speed limits become suggestions, and red lights become stop signs. In my years as a Domino’s franchisee I have been guilty of this on a few occasions.
Subway has a very small protected territory. That is one of the reasons there are so many of them. Good for the franchisor, but it would concern me as a franchisee.
Then the biggest franchisor, McDonalds has the smallest protected territory…your address. Of course, McDonald's is the gold standard for franchising and they can get away with it.
