Easy Steps to Cleaning Your Ceiling Fan

Chris and Ryan Belgrave  |    14 November 2014  |    House Cleaning Tips,  |    Virginia Beach

The ceiling Fan! Would you believe the first ceiling fan was invented in the 1800s. Who knew! Most of us love them, I know, I do! On a hot summer day they circulating a cool breeze throughout the room and forcing the warm air down to warm us up in the winter. Ceiling fans should be cleaned at a minimum weekly to avoid dirt and dust build up. Dirty blades with built-up can cause your ceiling fan to wobble and start weird noises. For a weekly cleaning of your ceiling fan use a light feathered ceiling fan duster or a microfiber ceiling fan duster, either one works great. Make sure it has an extendable pole so you don’t have to climb a ladder.

Now, if you've never cleaned your ceiling fan before or in a couple of months. I’m sure that you will need to perform a deep cleaning. We here at You've Got Maids of Virginia Beach we suggest deep cleaning your ceiling fans quarterly. For this type of cleaning you will need a tall ladder, a cleaning cloth, and a small container of soap and water mix or an all-purpose cleaner.

To perform a deep cleaning on your fan:

NoteThis task should be performed with two people to insure safety.

  1. Turning off the ceiling fan
  2. Position a tall step ladder beneath the fan, not directly underneath it.
  3. Have the other person hold the ladder
  4. Carefully climb the ladder
  5. Rotate fan blades as needed to clean individually
  6. Use a vacuum with a hose and brush attachment to remove all the loose dirt and dust
  7. Wipe around motor housing and on top

To avoid the cleaner from getting into the motor of the ceiling fan, do not spray it, wipe it. Continue this process until the ceiling fan is cleaned.  Give our office a call at 757.932.5326 or visit us on the web at VA.YouveGotMaids.com for all your house cleaning needs.
