How Can I Clean with Baking Soda?

You probably have between one and five boxes of baking soda scattered amongst the forgotten corners of your kitchen. You may not even know where they came from, but they'll be right there waiting for you. These boxes of baking soda can be found taking up your kitchen space and implicitly challenging you to find an actual use for them, other than gathering dust. We're here to find an effective cleaning use for these forgotten boxes; because, baking soda is one of the most effective naturally occurring cleaning products. Let's go through some of the many ways that you can use baking soda to clean your kitchen. 

 

The Process 

Clean up Fridge Spills: Your fridge has a lot of potential areas for spilled food and grime to accumulate. You can use a 1:1 mixture of baking soda and dish soap to quickly get rid of this problem. Spread some of the mixture on these problem areas and use a sponge to scrub the grime right off.

Boxes of Baking Soda for Freshness: Place one or two opened boxes of baking soda inside your fridge to give those odd fridge scents something other than your food to bond with. Baking soda naturally attracts acidic and base particles, and once they bond with the bicarbonate they are completely neutralized. You should replace the boxes every few months, and make sure to avoid using these for cooking. 

Deodorize the Walls of your Fridge: If you simply can't get rid of an odd odor, you should consider removing all of your food products and doing a thorough top to bottom cleaning. Shine your Stainless Steel: You can shake a bit of baking soda onto a soft kitchen rag and use it to buff up the interior of your sink, or the outside of your refrigerator. This doesn't work as well as using those harsh smelling stainless steel chemical sprays, but it feels about 110% less toxic to breathe in. 

Clean your Drains: Want to make your drains smell fresh and new again? They may start to smell weird, and you can use baking soda to fix that issue with just a few spare moments. Run a bit of hot water down the sink you want to clean for 30 seconds, Turn the water off, and then pour a half cup of baking soda down the drain and let it sit there for about 15 minutes. This will deodorize your sink in the same way that baking soda makes your fridge smell fresh and clean. Run some hot water at the end and flush the baking soda down the drain.

Clean your Grout: Pour a little bit of hydrogen peroxide into a measuring cup with some baking soda in it. If you have a lot to clean, start with a cup of baking soda and pour the peroxide in whilst you mix. It'll begin to form a paste that you can easily use to clean the grout in between your tiles. We recommend purchasing an industrial strength toothbrush to really get into the nooks and crannies.

Clean your Scorched and Dirty pans: Pour a cup of vinegar into a microwavable bowl, and turn it on in the microwave until it boils. Meanwhile, sprinkle a covering of baking soda over the entire surface of the pan. Pour the vinegar over the baking soda with the help of a pair of hot mitts, and then let it sit for 30 minutes. 

Get rid of Trash Can Smells: Sprinkle a bit of baking soda into the bottom of your trash can whenever you change the trash bag to naturally deodorize the area. 

Polish your Silverware: Mix together a mixture of baking soda and water, 3 parts of baking soda and 1 part water. Use this paste with a soft cleaning rag to wipe down your silverware. Run the silverware under your sink to wash off the mixture after you've completed the set.
