Five Guys was founded in 1986 by Janie and Jerry Murrell and their four sons (with Jerry and the sons being the original “Five Guys”). Jerry and Janie had a fifth son two years after opening their first restaurant; all five sons, the current “Five Guys“, are now involved in the business. As of May 2009, there are more than 400 locations.

Franchisee Qualification Criteria

Applicants must meet these basic requirements to be considered for a Five Guys franchise:

Liquid Assets around $500,000
Net Worth around $1,300,000
Food and Beverage Industry Experience
Business ownership and employee management experience
Ability to purchase the rights to open five (5) or more locations
Commitment to protecting and enhancing the Five Guys brand integrity
A passion for burgers and fries

Basic Fees and Costs

Franchise fee: $25,000 per restaurant
Development Fee: $30,000 per restaurant
6% (7.5 % in New York) Royalty Fee
3% Total Marketing Fee (1.5% for national marketing and 1.5% for local use)
Approximately $200,000 to $500,000 for build out costs
