WEST MELBOURNE, FL – West Melbourne police arrested a independent housekeeper in connection with the theft of jewelry from a house where she worked.  Robin Poole, 46, of Palm Bay faces 11 counts of grand theft and 11 counts of providing false ownership information to a pawnshop. West Melbourne police said Poole stole jewelry from a customer’s jewelry box — one item at a time — and then took them to a pawnshop. LARRY COLLINS AT NBC 2 – CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA CATCHES A CLEANING LADY DIRTY HANDED

A North Charleston family noticed that money and jewelry had been disappearing and they feared their cleaning lady of 10 years was cleaning them out.  Instead of firing the independent cleaner and moving on, these Lowcountry victims called News 2 Problem Solver Larry Collins.  Congratulations to the family and News 2 Problem Solvers for breaking this case…Larry Collins placed hidden cameras in the home and allowed the dirty handed cleaning lady to incriminate herself.  The News 2 video says it all.

According to the New 2 video this cleaning lady had a criminal record for shoplifting.  This woman would not have passed You’ve Got MAIDS criminal background check.   Our professional maids are thoroughly screened, trained at Maid University, insured, bonded, and supervised.

This North Charleston family may have gotten off easy.

What if she had fallen inside the home? Since she is not covered under workers compensation insurance the tables would be turned and she could have sued this family!  Real maid services protect their clients by purchasing workers compensation insurance.

What if the IRS doesn’t view her as an independent contractor? If you pay your cleaning lady more than $1600 a year the IRS views her as your domestic employee.  When you have employees you need to verify if he or she can legally work in the United States.  Then you have to have them complete U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification forms on the first day of work or you might end up in Gitmo.  Next you must withhold Medicare and Social Security taxes from her wages. Since you are an employer now you must match those withholdings and remit them to the IRS.  Don’t forget federal unemployment taxes, as well as any state taxes due.  Real maid services insulate their clients by paying all employment taxes.

  2. 2. Keep a written inventory of valuables.
