Both action and inaction are risky for the would be entrepreneur.  It must be difficult trying to gauge when to jump into entrepreneurial world of the self-employed.  It’s like standing and watching a merry-go-round in motion.  You want to be on the merry-go-round, it looks fun and exciting.  However, this particular merry-go-round never stops, so the only way to join the party is to start running with it, make a calculated & courageous leap of faith, and then find something to hang on to.

I’ve been in the franchise business world for over 20 years now, and I can’t tell you how many conversations I have had with people who work for the man, but want to own their own business.  These exchanges have convinced me that a sizeable segment of the population are leading lives of quiet desperation, only dreaming of the day that they jump on.  Sadly, for most, this day will never come.

These tough economic times provide a great excuse to delay action.  Digest a small dose of all the news that is fit to print each day and you would have a basketful of reasons not to act.   Some extremist are filling bunkers with provisions for the end of the world based on the content of the nightly news.

These are bad times, but what does that matter? The residential cleaning industry is still humming along.  Most of those that have been laid off from their jobs where not our target demographic in the first place.  Truth is our clients homes are still getting dirty every single day.  Truth is dual-income  & wealthy families still have enough money to delegate away the unsavory chore of housecleaning so that they can focus on that part of their lives that produces income.  A maid service franchise creates free time for our Clients, and free time is a commodity that busy people are willing to pay good money for it.

If you believe this is not a good time to open a business, I guarantee you will invent another excuse when the economy turns around (and it always turns around, because this is America).  Best to be honest with yourself.  Stop using the economy as an excuse.  Own it.  Say the reason you will not go into business for yourself today is that you cannot overcome your fear of failure.  Guess what?  That fear of failure will still be there when our economy is going great guns again.

Machiavelli had it right 500 years ago when he pointed out that all action is risky!  Choosing not to follow your dreams is risky!  Choosing to stay in the job that you loath is risky!  Don’t get good at suffering, instead develop the inner strength to make bold moves with your life!

Five Guy Triumphs – Can a Maid Service Duplicate?

A recent post, “Five Guy Triumphs as Consumer Favorite, Study Says” on QSR Magazine.com, revealed that Five Guy Burgers beat Panera Bread, Chik-fil-A, Chipotle & McDonalds for favorite quick-service/fast-casual restaurant.  I took my oldest son to Five Guys for lunch last Saturday and this study does not surprise me.  We ordered two hamburgers, a couple sweet teas, and fries that we split.  I was so happy to get the free peanuts that I forgot about the $20 I shelled out.   I did note it was more expensive than McDonalds, but I feel the value proposition is in line.

Here is what Janet Eden-Harris, chief marketing officer for Market Force stated…

“There’s a direct correlation between how satisfied a customer is and how much they spend, so delighting the customer can go all the way to the bottom line.”

No maid service can provide a taste sensation like Five Guys. Sure consumers prefer working with a professional maid service franchise, but no matter how good, or how green your cleaning company is, there is no taste, texture, or aroma to great maid service.  In fact it’s easy to over look perfect cleaning!   Recall the words of Tom Peters when he said “You know what the problem with perfection is? Perfect Maid Service?

I like the advice Escape from Cubicle Nation author, Pamela Slim, give to entrepreneurs.
